Rachel Kelz, MD, MSCE

Dr. Kelz received her Master’s degree in Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics from the School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania in 2002. She joined the clinical practices of the University of Pennsylvania in 2004. She is a board-certified general surgeon and runs an endocrine surgical practice at HUP. She is an Associate Professor of Surgery at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. She is recognized as a leader in surgical education and was recently awarded the Lindback Foundation award for distinguished teaching by the Provost of the University of Pennsylvania. She serves as the Surgeon Champion for the National Surgical Quality Improvement Program at Penn. Her work in outcomes and education has recently merged and she is focusing on innovative approaches to utilizing administrative data in combination with chart abstraction to identify performance improvement opportunities and utilize patient data to drive surgical education. She has published multiple peer-reviewed articles relating to surgical outcomes and has received funding from several sources including the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
