Carmen Guerra, MD, MSCE, FACP

Dr. Carmen Guerra is an Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of General Internal Medicine at Penn's Perelman School of Medicine, and Associate Director of Diversity and Outreach at the Abramson Cancer Center. Her research interests focus on cancer screening and prevention, specifically colorectal, breast and cervical cancer and on better understanding and reducing cancer disparities across the entire spectrum of cancer – from screening to survivorship. Dr. Guerra is the founding director of the UPHS colorectal cancer screening navigation program and the UPHS Healthy Woman Program, which helps improve access to cancer screening tests for vulnerable populations.

Dr. Guerra has received multiple NIH grants to better understand and overcome barriers to colorectal cancer screening, including an NCI K01 to understand the barriers and facilitators to physician recommendation of colorectal cancer, NCI-CCECR II pilot funding to test a web-based multifaceted intervention to increase provider recommendation rates of colorectal cancer screening, and an NCI K22 to test this intervention in a randomized controlled design within a population of internists enrolled in the American Board of Internal Medicine’s Maintenance of Certification program.

Dr. Guerra is a member of the American Cancer Society's National Board of Directors and co-chairs its Mission Outcomes Committee and is also a member of the ACS guidelines committee. In January 2018 she begins serving as the ACS National Board Scientific Officer. She received the prestigious St. George National Award from the ACS in 2017.
