Joseph Kern, MD

MSHP Student

Born and raised in Chicago, Dr. Kern pursued his undergraduate degree in Neuroscience from the University of Pittsburgh, before moving to Zambia to serve as Health Volunteer for the United States Peace Corps. Upon the completion of his service, he returned home to Chicago, where he obtained his medical degree from the University of Chicago, found his way to the field of General Surgery, and further developed his commitment to community and service. He is currently a PGY-4 General Surgery resident at the University of Pennsylvania, and is interested in pursuing a career in Trauma and Surgical Critical Care. Beyond his clinical interests, he is interested in understanding the economic and policy factors that impact victims of violent injury and in developing targeted, sustainable interventions that will reduce risks of violence, and improve health and socioeconomic outcomes following injury.
